Rhubarb Pie

It's rhubarb season, and I'm in all my states of culinary glory. For those of you who have never cooked with rhubarb, you're missing out! It is a delicious treat, especially in pie or cobbler. If you've never heard of rhubarb... Rhubarb - The rhubarb is a very tart member of the buckwheat family. It is generally eaten as a fruit but is actually a vegetable. It is used in sauces, jams, and desserts. Rhubarb leaves contain the toxin "oxalic acid" and should not be eaten. Rhubarb can be bought in grocery stores and looks like red celery stalks. There shouldn't be any leaves on the rhubarb; remember--they're poisonous! Rhubarb stalks can be cut, cross-wise, into 1/2 inch pieces and used in pie recipes. It cooks up like strawberries--but better, more tart and not as mushy. Easier to prepare, too! I have been inspired by the delicious-looking food on KimchiJon's blog, and hope to post some of my own offerings. I did, indeed, bake a lovely pie last night, but didn't think to take a picture until after it was mostly demolished. Sorry!

Anyway, if you haven't tried rhubarb, you should. It is delicious!

Hey Infomatrix! It's AVWoman! Love your blog. What a neat way to keep in touch. We miss you like CRAZY at the library. TIL and I were at Disneyland yesterday and we thought of you many times. Now I'll stick my fat little SoCal neck out and say that rhubarb is on my top ten list of foods that I simply won't touch. Rhubara disguised by any other fruit such as strawberries will be sussed out and removed from my mouth with as much discretion as I can muster at the given moment. I was introduced to rhubarb when my hubby and I lived in the midwest. We were served rhubarb pie at the very first dinner we shared with a new friend. As soon as the smell hit my nose, I knew I was in trouble but I managed to gag down about two or three bites, just to be polite. Just to be absolutely fair, I did try at least two other rhubarb concotions but no go! Look at it this way. If I don't eat any of the stuff, there's just that much more for those of you who love it!
RE the dogwood story - you know I'm a Christian and my faith means a lot to me. I share it when it's appropriate and I don't deny it if challenged but the dogwood story just makes me sad. This is the kind of thing that often makes Christians such a joke. Please don't judge all of us by this story!
Sorry - my fingers are running away with me. Love ya, sweetie!

Yea, AVWoman! I'm so happy you're reading. I will try to keep my blog interesting so you will keep reading. RE: rhubarb... wah. I'm sorry you don't like it but as you say--more for me! (Remember me and beets? EEEEK! VILE, EVIL WEED!) As for the dogwood... I'm trying to maintain a good sense of humor and not be over-critical. Unfortunately, the annoyingly zealous Christians do paint a more lasting picture than the politely devout. At least she's not out lynching non-Catholics!

I don't think I've ever really had rhubarb. Not a big Southern California thing I guess. I believe ArmyGuy likes it though. I like tart things though...maybe I'll try it!

Yummy! But store bought, what a sacrilege, must be homegrown and freshly picked. But then, I still believe the best pie crusts must be made with lard. Nebraska farm boy roots run deep.
