I am now able to say that I have experienced the most boring game in the known universe. It is a dice game called "Bunco" and is the game of choice at military social events. In my opinion, Bunco should be deemed intellectually barren and banned from the United States. A truly horrible, horrible game. I'm not going to bore you with the rules for Bunco, you can link to them yourself and waste two minutes trying to figure out why this game was invented. What I will tell you about Bunco is that it is completely random. You roll dice, there is no strategy involved--just point counting--and that's about it.
Why play Bunco? you ask. Well, after being introduced to Bunco for the first time last Friday, I can surmise that playing Bunco allows people to get together, get drunk, eat food, and gossip without actually having to admit that that is why they are getting together. Bunco is a RUSE! Nobody actually gives a flying Fig Newton about the game and who wins (since there is no intellectual challenge or strategy); they just want to be able to say "I'm playing Bunco tonight" as opposed to saying "I'm going to go out and gossip, bitch, and moan about life with 11 other people tonight." I don't mind getting together to eat, drink, and complain about the military and other subjects, but let's call a spade a spade and drop the Bunco subterfuge.
When I play a game, I play to WIN. I don't like games that I don't have any control over-- probably one of the reasons I don't like to gamble, I know the odds are in the casino's favor--and a game that I have no control over drives me crackers. A total waste of brain cells, in my opinion. I don't think I'll be playing any more. I plan to just show up for the food, drink, and bitching, then leave when the dice can comes out.
Has anyone else ever heard of or played Bunco? It seems to be big in the South (XCircMan? Ever played?) and also in the military community. I'm from Michigan, we play a card game called "Euchre" and that's our wierd regional game of choice. It involves strategy, planning, and a partner, so I like it!. Screw bunco.

I've heard the name "Bunco" but I've never really known what it was--or cared. Now I know not to start caring.
I agree, drink, bitch, gossip--just do it.
Ten years in the military and still no idea what the hell Bunco is. Now that I know it is boring (thank you, Infomatrix) I will be sure to steer clear of it if it ever rears its boring head. Bitch away!!!
