MissSwan posted an interesting series of questions on her recent BLOG entry, then asked the Illustrated Librarian to answer the same questions. Now I've been tagged with the same book quiz -- it has made me take a thoughtful look at my collection. So, MissSwan and IL, here goes:
- Total books owned, ever: Yeesh. I'd have to guess in the thousands. I obsessively collect children's books (under the guise of buying them for my children...) and I have a big turnover of paperbacks, which I read and then donate to the library. I also buy ebooks from places like Amberquill (online ebook purchases at a reasonable rate). In my life, to date, I'd have to ballpark in the mid-5K range? Maybe more? I'm a book buyer, what can I say? I have a little 'book problem', OK?
- Last book I bought: Dead Beat by Jim Butcher.
- Last book I read: I finished two around the same time (under the covers with a flashlight since my reading couch was occupied by my snoozing father-in-law at the time). First, and my grow-a-braincell book pick of the week, John Adams by David McCullough. McCullough is a great biographer and I got him to sign a copy of Truman for me when I was attending library school in MO and he was signing at the Union. What a thrill! The other, not-so-literary, yet much more fun was the book Fire Me Up by Katie MacAlister. Really funny, a quick read, and well written. Sequel to You Slay Me. (IL would love this series, hint, hint, hint!)
- Five books that mean a lot to me: That's hard. OK. I'll list five, but I'm not going to go into details. You can just think about my selection and take your guesses.
- Dragonsong by Anne McCaffrey
- The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings Trillogy by Tolkien
- The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper
- The Unabridged Oxford English Dictionary (print version only, please!)
- Shogun by James Clavell

Wow Infomatrix, you have a reader from Uruguay! How cool is that?
XCircMan, I'm so glad you like Susan Cooper too! Did you also like Lloyd Alexander? Anyanca, thanks for reading--I'll be reading your blog regularly, too! You're right, books are really necessary-- as vital as the air around us. IL...we're only a little bitty freaky, right?
I can't believe that you didn't include "Introduction to Cataloging and Classification" by Wynar and Taylor or "Basic Research Methods for Librarians" by Ronald Powell.
Have you any idea who this is?
I love that you included the OED. Someday I will buy a set. Maybe for my graduation.
OK, "Anonymous", I'm guessing you're a fan of bluebirds and have a husband who seems to have grandmothers in every country of the world... am I correct?
I am a fan of bluebirds, because it is my state bird. No husband, though. My wife might find that odd.
