I was thrilled to see that Turner Classic Movies is having a Hayao Miyazaki film salute this month. Considered to be the Steven Spielberg of Japanese movies, Hayao Miyazaki specializes in Japanese anime and manga movies. I LOVE THEM!
Tonight, starting at 8pm on TCM, is the fabulous Spirited Away. It is a wonderful film and well worth watching. In fact, this film won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature in 2003 (plus a score of other awards).
I think what I like best about Miyazaki's films is the sense of detail in the backgrounds that makes the viewer accept them as REAL, even though they may be completely mystical in nature. Each Thursday night, TCM will play another Miyazaki movie. I am particularly partial to: Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke (watch Mother Nature go ballistic!), Pom Poko and Kiki's Delivery Service.
Take my advice-- watch one of Miyazaki's movies during January. You'll love them!

Argh!!!! I missed it. I will look to see one of the others. I love him too.
I was mesmerized (as always) by Spirited Away. It is so detailed and the characters are so multi-faceted. I especially love the magical beings in Miyazaki's films. Haku the dragon/river spirit is one of my favorites. Sorry you missed this week's episodes... go for next week!
I have seen at different times both "Spirited Away" and "Princess Mononoke" and I always enjoy them very much. I'll have to try to get my peepers on "Pom Poko" and "Kiki's Delivery Service". I've seen the books for "Kiki's" around but I never knew they were from a Miyazaki movie. Thanks for the info, Matrix.
