BEGONE!

It's time for hurricane Ophelia to GET OUT! Think of a lumbering hippo, waddling on land (along the NC coastline, in fact) and that is a good description of Ophelia. It lumbered in...and is in the process of lumbering out. Enough, already! This hurricane has reminded us of our relatives: shows up with little notice, causes suffering, and doesn't leave. Call a priest, we need an exorcism.

We had about 24 hours of Ophelia's wind, rain, and more rain. Lots of branches down, pine cones and gum balls all over the yard (4 hours of raking), and flooding in our side yard. No damage to our 'so-awesome' 1950s military house. I could have only hoped that our house got mushed by a tree--we might have been upgraded to a larger one. (Or the tent city at the Houston Astrodome.)

Our power was out for about 16 hours, which sucked, but at least our water worked. Not having flushing toilets is, well, poopy at best. The annoying part about this outage was that it only on OUR side of the street! The other side (la, la, la) had power the entire time! We stood in our dark and humid house, longingly looking out the window at our neighbor's big-ass TV screen. I seriously considered getting out the binoculars. She also had on EVERY light in her house, as if to taunt us in our hour of darkness. Damned dirty ape.

To add insult to injury, the garbage crew SNUCK by at 6:30am to get our garbage. Now a)Normally, garbage isn't picked up until 10am, b) We had no power, so we didn't have the ability to tell that it was nigh until garbage time, and c) Everyone had their garbage cans tucked up near their houses so they wouldn't tip and blow over. The upshot is, those sneaky, snarky garbage bastards didn't have to pick up ANYONE'S garbage! And now we're stuck for another week with with our full cans! They think they're pulling a fast one, but wait until everyone's cans start overflowing. New Orleans Superdome-type garbage. Yuck.

So, that's the big hurricane story. No big whoop. The REAL irony of the day was that our hurricane preparedness kit, ordered in late August, STILL hasn't arrived. Maybe in time for NEXT YEAR'S season...?

It rained gum balls??

It is truly the end of days.

Sweet gum trees have spikey (think morningstar heads) gum balls/seeds that are about 2 inches in diameter. Maybe more. They drop from the trees in fall, but because of the heavy winds, we've gotten an early crop. They're hell on bare feet and not so good for the grass.

Even with the little inconveniences I am glad to hear you came through Ophelia relatively unscathed. Thank you for the update. I hope you are able to get back to regular living soon.
