When I lived in California, there were many good wines to choose from. Napa, Washington State, Oregon State... all areas with great wine. Some very expensive, some very reasonable. I had alot of imports to choose from, too, and I especially enjoyed Australian and Chilean wines. (The French and Italian wines are good, but often the ones sent to the U.S. are not the best, more like table wines than anything else, and I can get good U.S. table wines for half the cost.)
Now that I'm back on the East Coast, hunkered down in the Carolinas, I've had to give up a lot of my regulars. (Try finding Kunde on a Piggly-Wiggly shelf. It's not going to happen.) That's OK, I don't mind experimenting. Actually, I've found a new, local favorite.
MUSCADINE WINE!
Muscadine grapes grow in the south. They have a high sugar content and are very sweet. You see them growing wild on fencerows or cultivated in vinyards. I have come to ADORE wine made with muscadine grapes (they also make great jelly!). It's sweet, and round-flavored, and highly reminiscent of communion wine from when I was a child. (FYI, Episcopalians booze it up at communion, especially we northerners!)
SO... if you have the chance to drink muscadine wine, give it a shot. It's NOT a snooty cab or a merlot with an attitude. It's an experience unto itself. It's also very easy to drink, so beware!
Have you tried it?

I've discovered a Muscat wine imorted from Italy! It has "Asti" in the title, so it is a little bubbly!! YUMMY! Muscadine is oe of my faves too! As most of you know, librarians can certainly booze it up!!!
You are a woman after my own heart, Monchichichick! MO has many sweet wines as well--as I fondly remember--and if bubbles are added to a Muscat wine, so much the better! Sweet champagne is also yummy. I was told by the diva of wines at UM-Columbia that there is NOTHING wrong with a sweet champagne or wine. Only ignorant wine snobs turn up their noses. So much more for the rest of us!
uh...what?
I'm pitifully uneducated about wine.
It's just vodka for this boozing librarian!
If I recall, you and I BOTH love sweet wines! Those dry wine snobs make me ill!!!
