Begin at the beginning...

I get a rare moment of complete privacy and what happens? I start a blog. I'm Infomatrix, and I'm giving all the credit for this burst of enthusiasm to my dear friend, The Illustrated Librarian. [I think TIL should also deal with any furor I generate as a result of being able to publish my Digital Effluvia online. ]

I'm a librarian, currently an UNEMPLOYED librarian, languishing in the heart of the Deep South aboard a military base. Why? My husband is a Marine. And a lawyer. A lawyer for the USMC. For future reference, we'll call him... USMCMan. Anyway, like most military personnel, USMCMan is ordered to move every 3 years or so. This makes it very difficult for me to keep a long-term job. I am trying to maintain libraryland skills, but it is often difficult due to limited access to technology. [The USMC usually puts bases in remote locations. Unfortunately, this means underfunded tax bases with antiquated library systems. Example: our base library reference staff writes down book reserves on pieces of paper and staples them together in thick wads. The more reserves, the more staples, the bigger the wad of papers. A fabulous system--not.]

I miss librarianship, but I do admit that it is nice not to have to deal with the public. Ugh. The sweaty masses of humanity. I worked for 10 years in Southern California. I know all about sweaty people. August in a library reference room is a nightmare for the nostrils.

Now that I'm residing in the South, I'm being introduced to a whole new culture. I will try to share this culture with you--tell me what you think. Is it as odd as it seems? Is it just me being a midwesterner and not really understanding the local flavor? You'll have to let me know. I'll share the quirks of military life (no secret stuff, just the public oddities) and anything else that cracks me up.

Welcome. Thanks for reading. Come back soon and let me know what you think.

Hugs to IL and XCircMan! Yes, I am dipping a toe into bloggerland. I can only use epic blogs such as yours to guide my way... XCirc, I had to publish an entry about sweet tea and admit my recent lapse of reason. I may have to go out for hush puppies later this week, just as an experiment, of course!

You have absolutely got to try hushpuppies! They are only one of the greatest confections ever devised, plus, they are deep-fried! Please let the huddled masses know what the South is like (XCircMan is a little biased). Love you and miss you. Say "Hi" to USMCMan, O & H.
